before the Independence of India:

- European’s often hold an eminently respectable office (ein hoch angesehenes Amt innehaben)

- they often have a privileged life

- most of them are rich

- they don’t want to live like Indian’s, but want to controle them. –> Indian’s are less value than British.

- they don’t accept the Indian culture and want to impose the English one upon them, but live in their country.

after the Independence of India: (1947):

- the European’s often have to drop out of India or rather flee from India

- has no furniture and doesn’t want some

- speaks a little Hindu
aims / wishes: – wants to get to know her grandfather’s life

- wants to retrace the steps of Olivia

- just wants to see India as it really is
woman in dormitory (neighbour):

appearance: – looks like a ghost

- wears a white night-gown

- long hair –> plait

- thin and white but looks also tough/toughened-up, like a ghost with backbone

state of mind: – very religious

- outgoing , talkactive

- hates Indian food –> she is not to be about to accommodate herself to the Indian culture

background: – has been in India for thirty years

- Christian

- always stays in the S.M. when she comes to Bombay

- knows Miss Tietz for twenty years

aims / wishes: – wants to live in God’s will

Miss Tietz:

background: -came to India with the Christian Sisterhood

- is Swiss

- the last ten years she has been looking after the S.M.

Inder Lal (the landlord of the narrator)

- state of mind: – is disappointed with the way the narrator live in her room (looks for furniture) –> wants that his guest is pleased –> hospitable

- is too polite to voice his disappointment and is afraid of embarrass s.o.

- is annoyed by the hirjab’s
background: – works at an office in the Britsh residential area
